Urban growth in ANY country tends to be where major economic activity occurs. Due to some skill matching principles (this is a part of developmental economics), they tend to attract the most talented workers, etc. In short, this means that urban growth creates jobs, technology, productivity.....which increases the standard of living.

On the flip side, urban areas tend to attract crime, cause pollution, traffic, and bad sports teams. Additionally, if urban areas are taking over rural areas then there tends to be economic impacts as well. Further - in the long term a decrease in rural farmland decreases a nation's agricultural base.

Urban growth is actually pretty good, because it lowers suburban sprawl.

Now that people are more interested in easy transportation, it is good to build the cities rather than the country.

Negatives: Higher prices, Higher crime, etc

Negative effects: increase crime, increase noise and air pollution as we drive to work, inner cities left to rot. Advantages: lots of jobs as we construct urban dwellings, live closer to our schools.
