merchant ships don't.........navy ships do it all the time...it's called "Underway Replenishment" or "UnRep".....type that into your search engine..


basically, the tanker holds steady course...the ship needing fuel ( or ammo or food or parts) steams up alongside, about a hundred feet away...lines are fired over, then heavier lines pulled between the ships; refueling hoses are supported by these lines and oil pumped from one to the other......

this is a VERY complicated piece of very tricky seamanship done all the time by the US and Royal ( as well as other) navies and there isn't room for complete explanation here......follow the links you get from the search suggested above......but Un Rep is how warships stay out for up to 6 months at a time.......

They don't. They carry "bunkers" (fuel) in their fuel tanks. Ships have huge fuel tanks. The captain of the ship has to calculate the right amount of bunkers for his next port call.

Well,I guess they don't.I think they usually refuel when they reach the land ...
