Not a dictionary definition, but.....
Originally a derogatory term for a farmer being sunburned from walking behind a plow.
Used to describe a backward, uneducated southern type by northerners or city folk.
More currently any rural "good old boy" who has disdains city life , enjoys living the country lifestyle & considers being a "redneck" a good thing.
Would'n say its rude, but depending on where you say it ....it might be best to smile & buy a round of beers.
Best regards

I moved to the state of Alabama 7 or 8 months ago and have worked here a bit and please allow me to give you my honest opinion. I am not from the south so here goes.
First, they are not all anything. The people here are friendlier than in the west where I came from.
They are kind and plain folks earning a living to feed the kids and keep a roof over their families heads.
They do go hunting to kill deer and other animals. They do drive pick-ups and some of them are new too.
When a disaster hits here (tornado or deep freeze) they pool together more and help one another out.
The south is all about GOD, COUNTRY AND FAMILY.
All in all, I would say the southerners I have met are just plain good people. Rednecks maybe but hard working people too. We are in this together here.

This not my definition, but I found it in Urban Dictionary online
redneck
Mildly offensive term for a lower class white person from the southeastern states of the USA. Derives from someone who spent a lot of time on manual labor outside and so received a "red neck" from the sun.
It's basically a slang term used to describe cowboy (girl) ways...country folk
Example:
my late husband was a redneck..he liked blue collar labor, country music, jeans and t-shirt,rolled his own cigarettes, hunting and fishing, was satisfied with used or second hand goods, didn't mind getting dirt under his fingernails, liked the great "outdoors"...loved animals, liked a woman who wasn't afraid to join him in activities mentioned above, spoke plain english, was patriotic, respected his elders, cared deeply for children and their well being...and so on

We use that in South Africa a lot. Our Afrikaans speaking people call the English speaking ones Rednecks! But look at the link to get the true meaning.

The cast from the old tv show "The Dukes of Hazzard" would be considered red-neck.
Usually an offensive term refering the rural laboring class with an extremely conservative and bigoted attitude.
Originated in the Appalachians and south, now widespread across the U.S. and parts of Canada.

That's what some people call a hill Billie. Oooops! You probably don't know that one either. Ask Jeff Foxworthy. Really it's a derogatory remark made by every one whose not a red neck. I'm proud to be one. Long live the South or North as in my case. I'm red neck by parentage.

lol You should find a website with some sayings by Jeff Foxworthy...he has some humorous sayings among those lines, although probably exaggerated.
The real meaning of redneck is tough to pin down, because people have their own ideas of what they are, but they revolve somehow around living in the country and maybe living in a trailer house. Some people think they raise cows, but that's not necessarily true. Maybe if they only have one cow and one pig and they are their pets...lol

I just meant by my question, after yours, that I must be a redneck as I think some of those points I may be able to apply to myself, I didnt find this offensive in anyway, actually an eye opener of my own redneck ways.

A hick, a hillbilly, a country bumpkin. Pretty much me and my family in a nutshell! Rusty old pickups, sweaty white t-shirts and raggedy jeans, trucker hats, beer belly's, barefoot and pregnant wives (or girlfriends), completely blunt and often rude, loud and obnoxious (especially when drinking), talks with a slow drawl and atrocious grammar. But usually very friendly and helpful, and never too busy to give you the time of day. All these things come to mind. Have you ever seen "My name is Earl?" If so, then there you go!

Redneck is a term, usually derogatory, used to describe someone from the Southern US. It's meant to imply that they're uneducated, uncultured and generally low-class.
