The altering cave is supposed to be filled with rare pokemon that you can not get anywhere else in the game. The only way to get these pokemon was by downloading the code given out at nintendo events using the wireless adapter. You can still get these downloads if you live in new york, you just go to the nintendo building and turn on your pokemon game and wirless adapter. I have also heard that you can get these downloads from gamestops and eb games. Im not sure if they still do that though.

From what I understand, the Altering Cave was supposed to be a secret cave in which you could get some rare Pokemon. The idea was scrapped at the last minute and so the game developers instead put a bunch of Zubat in the cave instead.
Sorry, it's not anything more special than that. I guess at one point it was supposed to be but at game release that's all there is to it. I was disappointed too--had to look it up to find out about it.
If you have any other questions try gamewinners.com, gamefaqs.com or serebii.net or email me. Good luck!

The pokemon in it change depending on the nintendo events you have been to (the real life events where you get deoxys and celebi and all those other guys). the available pokemon are: zubat, mareep, aipom, pineco, shuckle, teddiursa, houndour, stantler, smeargle. at first, you will only find zubats, but as you attend more nintendo events, there will be more of a variety.

it is a left over piece of coding from the japanese version.
it allowed for the use of the e-reader to change the available pokemon. try http://www.serebii.net/red_green/transform.shtml for more detail.
