I guess every show has to have the classic "idiot". Patrick being dense adds more humor to the show. I'm sorry that your little bro is upset that someone with his name has to be "the dumb one", but that's just what the creator decided to call him. I'm sure your little bro is an exceptional kid and is nothing like the dense Patrick of the popular cartoon.

Personally I think they were going for reality when creating the character of Patrick. (Though why they chose the name Patrick is unknown.)
Starfish are hungry little things. They also have no brains. Just really one giant stomach. I think that's why it was chosen to make the starfish of the show be the so-called stupid one.
Tell your brother not to take it too hard.

You should find other "Patrick's" for your brother to associate his name with if it bothers him so much. Patrick Stewart (Star Trek), Patrick Swayze (Roadhouse, Dirty dancing, etc.) Patrick Dempsey (Gray's Anatomy), Patrcik Kerney (Atlanta Falcons) and so on. More importantly make sure he understands the distinction between cartoons and himself.

Cause he's the idiot. Spongebob is the optimist, Squidward is the grouch, Sandy's the brains. Archetypes...wee.
I don't know why he named him "Patrick," though. Maybe he knew a guy named "Patrick" that he didn't like? :P
