Well, I don't know Stefano, but I do know that James Stenbeck has more lives than a cat. Up to this point he's been "dead" - blown up, shot, drowned (I think) and at least on other thing - Oh, I think he burned up in a cabin once. He is/was one of the most despicable, dishonest, malevolent, conniving people to ever walk the face of the earth.
So, based on his cunning and, since James can not be killed, I thinking he would win the battle.

Well 'Kids and' from above the same thing you say about James is the same thing you could say thing about Stefano. They call him the "Phoenix"
Now to answer the question, if it comes to hand to hand combat I'm gonna say James because Sefano has his minions to do his dirty work.
