If it were overturned wouldn't that make them lose votes if the abortion issue is gone?

Some people just do not women to have control of their bodies. They would rather the government tell people how to live, regulate them. Strange attitudes for conservatives who are supposed to be against the idea of government control, especially over someone's right to privacy.

Unlikely. They won't lose the anti-taxation (well, the other-than-Bush Republicans won't) vote, the small business owner vote, the wealthy individual vote, the Catholic vote, the Protestant vote, the Cuban vote, the middle class Black vote, the farm vote, etc etc.

Abortion polarizes the extremes anyway. Those who want complete control of one's person (even if another person happens to be living inside them) will always side with the party that places judges in position to uphold a woman's right to elective abortion. Those who believe that life begins at conception (and science will slowly be able to guarantee fetus viability at or shortly after conception) will always seek to vote for those who will place judges in position to heavily restrict instances where abortion is legal.

The abortion issue is, duh, inflammatory. But as I mentioned, science, in their thirst for cloning and stem cell production, etc. will make strides to ensure viability of the fetus at a very early stage. At that point, one can't split trimesters or stages of pregnancy as cutoffs for abortion. All kids will be able to be brought to full term, in or out of the womb. Fifty years away? 100 ? Who knows. But it will happen. Then the pro-choice crowd will be in a moral dilemma: If any fetus can survive, with ease and relatively modest cost, what gives a woman the right to end that child's life? You move away from the choice argument and a lot closer to murder.

For anyone with a child, for anyone who truly relates to and loves children (within their family or job or other context), the beauty and uniqueness of a child is astonishing. The thought of robbing that from someone will slowly but surely be deemed universally selfish. That's not to say that abortion may no longer be a choice but a standard that one has to demonstrate a legitimate case for. But elective abortion is not really a personal choice, because it involves SO many people, and not all are able to have a say in the decision.

I don't think either party does itself any favors by supporting parent or child alone. Both must be considered in the context of the abortive act, as well as methods, alternatives and consequences. It is not an easy decision, and legislation has thus far done a rugged and hardly elegant job of defining life, viability, moral consequences and individual freedoms (of all involved!). As science progresses, the government, the judges, the activists will be on the clock.

There is one sure way to maintain the high moral ground in any of this as a politician: Defend the Child. No one can ever fault you for defending a child. If they try, they'd likely look particularly foolish in their argumentation.

I would say so...they need that bone to toss out to get votes. We've had how many Republican presidents since the Roe travesty--and still more and more unborn babies are murdered.

They're forever tossing out issues on both sides to get voters.

One of our core beliefs is that all human life is sacred, but that would hardly mean that if abortion was illegal, there would be any less Republicans. Thats like saying that if the government had complete control over businesses, then there would be less Democrats.

Now thats a big stretch. I like how Liberals think that its only religious fundamentalists in the GOP.

Edit - itstimetostand, if I kill someone with my bare hands in privacy by your logic it would be ok.

No, because we'd still have to fight you on gay marriage and entitlements for the lazy/Democrats.
