He signed with the Devil Rays to be their second baseman in 2005, but retired in spring training. Alomar said that he could no longer play major league baseball because of of declining vision. It really was an amazing drop off. He had a great first half of the 2001 season with Cleveland, then just lost it. Most people think he couldn't handle New York when he was traded there in 2002, but I remember reading an article saying that he lost it in the second half of 2001, but that no one noticed because he still had great numbers. It's a shame because he looked to be a lock for 3000 hits.

He sure did level off after leaving Cleveland for New York. He dropped off fast! It would be nice to see him make a comeback. He was one of my favorite players-he could do it all-a gold glover in the field, hit for average and decent power, and stole bases. Another poster said he might try to come back with the Nats; they need all the help they can get, so maybe he would be a good fit there.

Yeah, he retired. One of if not the best secondbasemen of all time. 300 career hitter, great with the leather, good on the bases. My fav ball player of all time, him and omar visquel with the indians were a highlight a night duo.

you know what. i really don't care. he got old and sucked it up at the sport. but what is interesting is that when traded to new york, a possible minor league the Indians would have received if their scouting was better was some guy known as Jose Reyes
