Definitely the look and they don't understand why you had to break it.

A child is not going to learn to tell the truth, and to trust if they get broken promises. It is important to let them know that you think enough of them to do what you say you will. Don't you want people to trust you? How will they trust you if you don't follow through with a promise? We all make mistakes, and on occasion you may break a promise, but it is important to explain (not make an excuse) so they can understand why it happened. Reassure them and appologize. Alot of adults have trust issuses. Where do you think they got them?

I think it's cause they trust in you so much that you don't want to break it. And kids can't understand the reasoning even if you have the best reason in the world for having to break a promise. They are so innocent, you hate to burden them with breaking a promise at such a young age.

Never break a promise to a child ! It's not the look they give you, it's the guilt inside you that will eat you up !

Children have such big innocent hearts and really look forward to what they are being promised, so not making it really hurts. Think about when you were little and how someone promised you something and didn't make it? We forget about it as adults and start thinking about how busy we are and why don't they understand the pressures we have.

No, it is the fact that you may have destroyed that childs faith in you.
Breaking a promise to a child is a big deal to the child, and if, for some reason you do that, you should sit down and explain why it had to be done.

There is no trust any more genuine than from that of a child. So why would someone intentionally ever want to break the trust between themselves a child.

It's because if we continually break our promises, to children or adults, the person learns that our promises don't mean anything.

I never break promises to my kids. Their young, they don't understand things like 'something came up sorry'. They think of it as lying - would you want your kids to think you lie to them? It's just wrong, if at all possible I don't do it.
Don't make it unless you're sure you won't break it!

Because children learn by our example. If we break promises to them, we teach them not to honor their promises. And because they get so hurt about it, they look so sad.
