I have a rat and it is very annoying when it chews on the edge of the cage, and I just noticed that is is totally biting through. It is a very sweet rat, but what does it need other than attention(which I love to give!!!!!)

Rats, along with all other small pets, have teeth that constantly grow. If their teeth aren't filed down by their gnawing, they can grow through thier mouths or over their mouths keeping them shut so they can not eat. They need to be given plenty of toys to chew on. You can get things from the pet store like chew blocks, or other toys typically made out of wood for chewing.
Rats need to be kept in an all metal cage because of their chewing. If any part of their cage is plastic, they can and will get out.
Rats need a lot of things besides attention. They need toys, cozy beds, and clutter. They love having lots of random things inside of their cages, it keeps them intrested and occupied.

go and get a bag of greenies for it to chew on. their teeth constantly grow so they constantly chew. LOTS of toys to play with is a good thing to.

Its probably just trying to grind its teeth... my gerbil does that and I give her a wood block treat.. they have to keep their teeth from growing too long so give it something to chew on.

Maybe just give him a chew toy, like you would a dog. perhaps one of those Kong toys. (I don't know if it would get lodged in his GI tract though.)
