Supreme Court decisions are not required to be unanimous.

But a unanimous decision carries a lot more weight, for two reasons. First, people cannot argue that it was based on partisan politics, since there is no partisan split to the opinion.

Second, if there is no dissent, the learned individuals who are serving as Supreme Court Justices are not providing any legal ammunition for anyone who would challenge the holding.
