can someone tell me how to factor an expression without using exponents? Here is one you can do for an example:

36x(squared)y

First, only the x is squared. Second, 36 is also a perfect square. Factor out the square roots of each to get 6x and multiply it by the rest. Answer... 6x(6xy).

(36x)^2 y

= [(36 x 36)(x multiplied by x)] (y)

=(1296x^2)y
