I am. Hey at least Im honest. Seriously - there are several. If you are talking classics, then its Poe, Conan Doyle, Dashiell Hammett, Ellery Queen and Chandler. I love the pulp fiction detective noir style. And all of us mystery writers owe our very existances to Poe. Without him, we wouldnt exist. Contemporary - Michael Connelly, Carl Hiaasen and Glen Cook. Anyone here ever read Glen Cook's Garrett series?? Awesome. C.

Dorothy Sayers, by all means. Her most famous sleuth, Lord Peter Wimsey, is not only clever, but also a fun person to be around! He's from English nobility, but actually would rather hang out with the "lower" classes, much to his family's dismay; his detective angle is considered a disgrace, and the clashes he has with his family about that are funny.
Sayers was always careful to research her material very well. Two very good Wimsey novels are "Murder Must Advertise" (in which he gets a "real" job at an ad agency to ferret out a murderer) and "The Nine Tailors" (in which English change-ringing of church bells figures very heavily...but don't let that put you off, because you'll enjoy the story, bells and all!). And if you're not up for a complete novel, try "Lord Peter," which is a collection of all the short Wimsey mysteries. Happy reading!

Agatha Cristie is in my opinion the best mystery writer. I just read her book And Then There Were None and it was so good, It is my new favorite book! The way she comes up with an inginous plot, and interesting characters is excellent. I have herd Murder on the Orient Express is excellent too. I suggest reading at least one of her books. You will really enjoy it, it makes you want to read on and on, and I hate reading but I finished the book in like a day! Enjoy and please try it

My favorite mystery writer is Jim Butcher. I like Mr. Butcher's books because he deal with the paranormal-those issues that go beyond the realm of the physical. That outside world that bombards us with coincidence and abnormality is of interest to those who like a little more spice in our lives, versus the mortal mundane.

The best mystery I've read was The Daughter of Time by Josephine Tey, but that's the only story by her that I've read. For sheer volume of quality work it's hard to beat Raymond Chandler or Agatha Christie. I haven't read much Dashiell Hammett so I can't recommend his work.

Nancy Drew's author is one, because I used to read those books alot when I was younger. Good old-fashioned mystery.

Joan Lowery Nixon and Anthony Horowitz are two others whose books I read now. Joan Lowery Nixon puts some suspense in her stories and they also have a good plot. It's a bit simple though. Anthony Horowitz's books have good plots and they have a touch of humour in them. =)
