It is a long and sad story but in a nut shell Egypt did not get a single vote from any of the FIFA member countries. South Africa was chosen because it had a better offer, lobbying and the international community saw it as a chance to bring South Africa out of the shadows after decades of being isolated due to apartheid.
As for the second part of your question, I would say yes, Egypt is the reigning African football champion not only on the national team level but also on team level, as Ahly of Egypt has won the African champions league for the second time in a row.

yea, egypt took 0 votes to host the world cup. The Egyptian show for fifa was good but was an embaressment too. The egyptian team was made up of an actor and a some stupid people and they took a small boy who talked 3 languages( as if it is special).... while south africa had NELSON MANDELA, i think that is enough reasons, also Egypt isn't the type of place to hold big occasions like this, it is over populated and there will be poor services. In addition to that westerns think that the Egyptian land has curses because most of the matches which took place in Egypt between clubs or national teams it was for the Egyptian side and the match results were unexpected ie when ahly won real madrid and AS roma....
So forget Egypt to host any world cup before many years............yes, you will not have the chance to meet Thierry Henry :(

Because Egypt can't handle an event as World Cup. Not in the next 2 decades i guess.

Try to picture this, current Cairo traffic plus world cup traffic...... umm.... impossible, I know we were all disappointed but did we really properly prepare ourselves.
Egypt is a great nation, its just hasn't been feeling well for sometime.... we need to heal and fix the chaos that struck every aspect of our lives before thinking of hosting an international event like this.

it's good in football
but it's very bad in mangment
and that it is why we didn't make 2010 in egypt

it was a scandal, egyptians were all very disappointed and not only football fans :(
it doesn't matter in this case if egypt plays well or not, it's more of having the resources to hold such an event.

well, egypt doesn't have anything to do with AFrican and they don't represent Africa.. Africa means black skinned and trees and jungle not desert.. all the world know is that from north africa is arab world.. it doesn't make sense if it got to be played in egypt arab country...
plus no one is interested in inhume treatment of people within a country..
