The aurora is a natural phenomena caused by charged particles from the sun entering the upper atmosphere.
The aurora typically happens in the extreme northern and southern latitude. The theory is the charged particles are pushed toward the poles by the earth's magnetic field.
When the particles collide with the molecules the make up the upper atmosphere, energy is transferred to the molecules elevating their energy state. When the molecule goes back to it natural energy state it gives off light.
It is very interesting to watch the aurora. When the aurora is highly active the colors range from red, yellow, green to blue. The aurora looks like sheets of rain moving quickly across the sky. It is really interesting.
Typically the aurora is green and moves more slowly across the sky.
That is at least what I have been told after living in Alaska for many years.
Like I said it is interesting to watch when you realize it is caused by charged particles from the sun hitting our atmosphere.

Auroraborealis is when the sun's energy or charged particles come to close to the Earth's atmosphere. Because it is at the poles it changes color because of magnetism. These charged particles mess up ham radio operators. Ham radio is just a big fancy and powerful walky talky.

The solar wind get channeled by the earths magnetic field toward the poles. The lights in the sky that you see when you are very far south or north are caused by the high energy particles from the solar wind exciting atoms in the atmosphere which then emit light as they return to thier unexited state.

when a coronal mass ejection (CME) comes from the sun and hits the earth, the earths magnetic field channels the energy to the poles. when the electrons in the atmosphere get excited by the energy, they emit photons of light, which our eyes see as the aurora borealis
