Yup.. As long as it is in range (and not protected or you have access), all you need is a wireless adaptor.

Desktop connect to the Internet via wifi = yes.

You need an wifi network adapter card for the desktop and you need a wifi service to connect to.

In some communities (very few), college campus', airports, Starbucks, motels etc.. offer wifi service. Tough to haul a desktop to those.

In your home, you would get a wifi router or wifi access point that connect to an existing router that allows you to have wifi in your home. Basically the concept is that same Ethernet, only you replace the Ethernet "wire" with radio wave. Kind of like getting TV through an antenna vs cable.

There is a new, up and coming Internet service commonly called Municiple wifi or Muni wifi.

Wifi has a very limited range, therefore to roll it out across a metropolitan area a company like Verizon or ATT etc.. would have to install 1000s of access points. It's coming. There is a company called Front Range Internet doing it Colorado now.

To learn more look up 802.11G or wifi on Wikipedia or look at the tutorials at linksys.com or netgear.com.

First you need a Transevier, just a device that would plug into your USB or you can hook up a wireless receiver that plugs into your PCI slot. These are fairly common fare, and easily obtained from major retailors. Next, you will need the desktop pc to be placed into a hot zone. If the signal is not encrypted, then you should be able to get your internet. You might need to restart your computer in order for the pc to look for an available internet connection. You might also have to select witch internet connection to choose from when you start Internet Explorer, that is if you have another connection still connected.

While technically possible, wi-fi hotspots (or mostly wi-fi networking in general) have a maximum range of 100 meters. So, unless your desktop computer is within this range, you won't get ANY signal at all.

Anyway, there might be an ISP willing to offer you a Wi-Fi internet connection, and if there are any, they will provide you with all equipment needed. Check if there are any ISPs in your city offering this service.

Yeah, you will need an adaptor. Below is a link for one as requested. However, if you are trying to find a "Wi-Fi hotzone"
for a desktop, would require you carrying/hauling the desktop around whatever city until you found one. Hope you either got really strong arms & a really long power cord, or have some untold knowledge that you are trying to stike it rich on. If so don't forget us little people!!

Yes, you need to buy a wireless network adapter (practically all laptops have them built in now, but for dsktops you usually need to buy one) For a desktop, get one that connects with either PCI (card that goes insid the computer) or USB (external, if you don't want to open your computer to install a card), not MiniPCI (that's for laptops). You can get them from Best Buy, Newegg, Provantage, or probably anywhere that sells computer parts.

Of course you can only use it if the Wifi "hotspot" is near your computer, so for a desktop it's really only useful if you have your own wireless access point in your house.
