I have been on the Birth control shot DEPO PROVERA for about three years now. When I started doing research on it and found out it has very horrible side effect. So now I am looking for something else!
I got pregnant on the pill before so I am not too comfortable with using it. I also don't want anything that will make me gain weight, and little to know periods would be nice too as I have not had one since I have been on the shot.
My family is very fertile so I need to be careful in what I choose.
Thanks for all your help!

Ok let me make this clearer. I have been experiencing some of the side effects. I just didn't know that all of them were due to the shot till I did the research.

You should go and see a gynecologist. I went to one about a month ago to inquire about various methods of birth control. There are so many more options nowadays than just the standard birth control pill. You should look into it! Furthermore, if you haven't had any side effects after 3years, you probably won't get any at all.

http://www.fwhc.org/birth-control/index.htm see this site, it may help you in chosing birthcontrol. there are many options. also see the one about depo provera and read the "health risk". you should not use depo for more than 2 years for it may cause you to have osteoporosis. and many other side effects too. i've read many horror stories about it.

you can also download the "birth control comparison chart" for easy comparison of the methods. i've been also in search for a birth control that would be right for me, with less side effects. i'm on the pill for almost three years after i've given birth and it doesn't fail me yet. i think, it's the brand and also how you take it contributes to it's effectivity. finding the right brand is not easy and it takes trial and error in what works for you with minimal side effects.

good luck in chosing. i hope the site would help you, because it helped me a lot.

god bless!

I know that sometimes progestin/estrogen pills can be used as birth control in high doses, and if you tolerated the shot well, you should be able to tolerate this. These are also used to stop bleeding (that's why I take it) when it can get out of control, so I've been taking it for the past 3 months and haven't bled. I know that this can be very tricky though, so talk to your doctor, because she can give you the best options. Also a lot has changed in the area of birht control in 3 years, so I wouldn't rule it out completely. But still, your doctor is your best resource.

I was on Depo for about 8 years before they told me about thhe irreversable osteo it causes. This side effect won't show up right away. Also I have been on and off it, and let me tell you, I drop a good 30 pounds every time I go off.
The depo is NOT good to be on more than 3 years. (they tell me now)
What about an IUD? or the Patch?

If you're already on the shot and haven't had side effects chances are you aren't going to. Remember it doesn't apply to everyone.
