check your power steering fluid level and add to it as neccessary . if that isnt the cause, then the power steering pump itself may have failed or the belt that drives it broke.

The power steering fluid reservoir level should first be checked. If the fluid level is full then you may have any number of problems that may be at cause.Best to have a mechanic check out the PS pump and hoses, steering rack, and the steering linkages.

Like when was the last time you were under the hood. Check the fluid level, and do the oil and water levels while you are at it.
Get a Haynes Repair Manual at the local Auto Zone or auto parts store in your area. It will troubleshoot and show you how to fix your vehicle. Also on the Auto Zone site has a section for vehicle maintenance

If your fluid is down so much as to cause a heavy feel then you better check the source of your leak.
