I have a friend who was given a baby quilt with buttons at her shower and was wondering if that was really safe? I realize it would be her responsibility to check them....but never saw a blanket like that before.

I have to throw another opinion in here. It's true that isn't safe to give a small child a toy or blanket that has small pieces that could come off (buttons, eyes on a stuffed animal, etc.). However, not all baby quilts are intended to be used as bedding. It may have been intended as a purely decorative gift - something to be put on the wall, or draped over a chair in the nursery, and then given to the child when it got older. It may have been meant to become an heirloom, and you certainly wouldn't use an heirloom on a daily basis, to be covered with spit up and, well, you get the picture.

Not safe at all. Baby could choke on the buttons. When the baby gets old enough it could chew the buttons off. Not a good gift for a baby shower.

Just to be on the safe side I would not use it. If it's something very nice or she doesn't want to hurt the person who gave it to her she can use it as decoration. I have seen people use quilts and blanket to hang on the wall to add to the baby room decor.

No, as the baby gets older it will pick at the buttons (babies are fascinated with stuff like that) it could pull off the button and choke

i would say no. That could be a choking hazard. Is there any way to remove the buttons without damaging the blanket?

I think it's probably safe for a newborn. Once the baby started putting things in it's mouth I would say for her to stop using it - or to only use it if she was right there.

how can it be safe to have buttons where a baby can choke on them?

I wouldn't. It may be cute and can be put somewhere else, or while the baby doesn't chew on things and watching him/her closely the baby can lay on it, but other than that and when he/she starts to chew, no....
