www.craigslist.org has some short term opportunities on their "etc" job listings. Sometimes there are writing jobs. I think most of those work at home ads are scams so never send any money for anything. In your local community sometimes answering services route calls to homes, but it would really depend on the demand for such services in your area.

There are a lot of legitimate opportunities that allow you to work from home. Multi-level marketing could be something for you to look into. I work from home and I love my company(considered MLM), but that was only after I tried a few different companies. I too have a family with 4 small children and one car.
Anything that you look into will require you to examine your needs/desires and how much time you can put into it. No one here has the right to tell you one thing is better than the other because every opportunnity is not going to fit everybody. Find the one that fits your goals and needs and do it. Make sure you can make the commitments required by the company and then give it your all. I wish you the best of luck!!!

If you can type, you have a skill. There are many people who need transcriptionists to type up their recorded notes. Don't pay any attention to those stupid commercials saying you need to get a certification for that job. I've done it. You learn it really quick. The doctors use the same terminology over and over and over again. Most doctors, lawyers, or whatever, are happy to let you do it at home. You will need a transcription machine with headphones and you are good to go. By the way, you can make quite a bit of money at this--you can set your own hours--and when the kids need you, you can always be there.
Don't get involved with ANY multi-level marketing. They are all bad. They will try to convince you they are the greatest thing in the world, but I promise you, you will regret it if you get involved with them.

I looked at a lot of so called online work from home programs...and paid surveys...and lots of stuff...the only thing that seems legit to me, fully legit...is hits4pay...
http://www.iwebtool.com/shortcut/9580
This is how it works...
you sign up = FREE
your account is approved...
you receive emails...read the emails and click link to advertisement...FREE
and you earn a few cents...
its not a get rich quick scheme...its basically something you can do to earn some extra money day by day by just clicking a link...never costs you anything...and they actually give you $10 for signing up...every time you hit $25, they will send a check to the address you give them...thats all.

Many companies like Manuscript Services,Associated Content,Constant content pay for writing articles, poems,
proofreading and copywriting. These companies do not ask for any advance payment. A good writer can earn more than US$30 per hour. You have to directly apply online and the companies websites are listed at http://www.pcworkathome.net/freelancewritingjobs.html
