the distance a spring stretches varies directly with the force applied to it. if a 6 pound weight stretches a spring a distance of 21 inches, how far will the spring stretch if a 10 pound weight is applied?

21 inches divided by 6 pounds = 3.5 inches of spring for each pound of weight

10 pounds times 3.5 inches = 35 inches

If distance D is proportional to Force

multiplying the force by 10/6 will multiply the distance by 10/6

So distance = 210/6 inches

= 35 inches
(so long as your spring doesn't give out in the meantime)

F = k * x

First, find the spring constant, k

6 = k * 21
k = 6 / 21 = 2 / 7 (The units are lb/in)


Next, find the distance for 10 lb

F = k * x
10 = 2 / 7 * x

70 / 2 in = 35 in = x
