yes it is the past tense of the word get. ie. I got my newspaper yesterday.

Got/get is one of the most useful verbs in the English language. It can substitute for many other verbs. This is very useful to know when one teaches ESL. For example... I got it = I understand, I picked it up, I received it, I was punished. I got up = I awoke, I got better = improved, I got in = entered....
