Their "roles" changed very little. The vast majority of American women still stayed at home and cared for their families while their husbands went out and tried to make a living. On the farms their lives changed not at all. But women were by and large instrumental in getting prohibition passed, as well as furthering the cause of women's suffrage. They were finally given the right to vote, and exercize most rights enjoyed by men. At least under the law if not in actual practice. The good thing about it was children were able to grow up with their Moms at home, cooking, cleaning, caring for them. Unlike today. Now moms are working outside the home and kids pretty much raise themselves. The TV is now the surrogate parent.

Here you have some information:

Why are women so interested in creating their own enterprises? Koehn suggested that entrepreneurship offers great opportunities for women to move into the national economy. If you look back in time, she said, you discover great leaps in the number and extent of women entrepreneurs that correspond to periods of peak industrial or business upheavals, notably the mid-nineteenth century explosion within the textile industry and growing industrialization; the development of the national railroad system and the telegraph from 1880-1920; and the more recent information revolution.

These revolutions were all characterized by rapidly occurring change with broad impact and high stakes. In these intense times, cracks evolve and women move swiftly to enter into those cracks. In each of these periods, the American economy and society were changing and women consistently took advantage of the opportunities.http://hbswk.hbs.edu/item/3178.html
