I will be driving from Niagara to Miami over a 4 day period next month, as part of my vacation.
I don't want to spend all my time on freeways, and would like to see a little of America along the route but need to make steady progress to Miami as I have a cruise booked.

Any suggestions as to routes/attractions would be appreciated, as well as areas to avoid!

Thanks

Taking US Route 219 south, in Penna. - Bradford has an oil museum. If you are interested in world war 2, there is a wonderful museum just east on Bradford in Eldred (Route 417 to 446 south of Olean, NY). Continue south on 219 you pass near St. Boniface (Seldom Seen Coal Mine), Loretto (Southern Alleghenies Museum of Art), Altoona (Horseshoe Curve Railroad site, Allegheny Portage Railroad National Historic Site), Johnstown and its flood history, Buckstown (Flight 93 National Memorial). That brings you to Maryland. Rt. 219 continues down W. Va. to I-77. If you are sick of Allegheny Mountain driving, or behind schedule, take Rt 40/I68 east through Cumberland, Md. (Western Md Scenic Railroad, C&O Canal National Historic Park) to Hagerstown and down Interstate 81 into Va. south of Winchester continue on 81 (for fast route {or Route 11 for slow route} through the Shenandoah Valley) or go east on Interstate 66 to Rt. 340/522 to Front Royal. From there get on the Skyline Drive through Shenandoah National Park. If you like caves/antique cars, at Rt 211 go west a few miles to Luray for a nice tour through Luray caverns. They also have a nice antique car museum there. Back on Skyline Drive, near Waynesboro it turns into the Blue Ridge Parkway over the Blue Ridge Mountains. Down into Asheville, North Carolina and the Great Smoky Mountain National Park area. Running late? Take I-26 through South Carolina to I-95 to Miami. If you like beaches, from Jacksonville, Fla. south, take Rt A1A as much as you can. It runs on the barrier beaches.

Hard to beat "gosh137"'s answer. I would only add that if you dont want to spend so much time in curvy mountain driving, then use I-81 a little more. You could then add stops like Savannah, GA or Charleston, SC. Both are FULL of history and southern style. Once you hit florida, I like looking around Daytona beach and NASA at Cape canaveral. Have fun!
