In about 1765 James Hargreaves (d.1778) invented the "Spinning Jenny", Initially this machine allowed 16 spindles of thread to be spun but by the close of the century it included as many as 120 spindles.
The Spinning Jenny broke the bottle neck between the productive capacity of the spinners and the weavers, but it was still a piec of machinery that was used the cottage.
The machine that took cotton textile manufacture from the home to the factory was Richard Arkwright's (1732-1792) water frame. It was patented in 1769. It was a water powered device designed to permit the production of purely cotton fabric.
