You tie a cord to a pail of water, and you swing the pail in a vertical circle of radius 0.600 m. What minimum speed must you give the pail at the highest point of the circle if no water is to spill from it?

What are the forces acting on the pail at the top of the swing. If the speed is a minimum, then there will be no tension, so that the only force acting on it is gravity.

Since we have uniform circular motion...

F = m * a

mg = m * v^2 / r

v = sqrt (g*r)

in this problem,

v = sqrt(9.8 * .6) = 2.42m/s
