You need gunpowder usually wrapped up in a cloth or something to create a compartment with a wick on it that will pressurize from the explosions when you light it and cause the cannon ball in the gun to be forced out of the barrel. Gunpowder by itself may just sparkle and fizzle away without an explosion if it is not tightly wrapped in something. Just like in fireworks, you wrap the powder in cardboard or other containers that make the explosion happen because the heat from the igniting powder expands and puts pressure in all directs against the container that it has been placed in.

When the little string is lit it blows up the gun powder which therefore forces the ball out with pressure.
