My dog is an Australian Cattledog and everytime we drive up to the house he starts chasing the horses like crazy! He always does it when we first drive up, he just starts chasing them and barking at them, he even jumps up, grabs onto their tails (with his mouth) and swings off. He's very quick so they haven't kicked him yet, but he's ripping thier beautiful tails out! I know he does this because he's a herding dog but why especially when we drive up? Any suggestions on how to stop it?

Put the dog on a leash for a while. You need to stop the behaviour, so if you put a leash on him before you pull up, you can hang on to him and scold him when he tries to run up on the horses, then after he calms down let him off the leash. If he then runs up on the horses you know next time to leave it on a bit longer.

Now that it's a habit, it will be harder to break than to prevent.

And actually, having several Australian Blue Heelers on the farm growing up, to be honest, a good kick from the horses will be good for him too *L* Sooner or later, if he keeps it up, he'll get kicked. My dogs ALL got kicked sooner or later...never any real damage to the dogs though, after a good yip-session ;)

He is showing his dominance when you return home from the hunt! The alpha's got to eat first and he is trying to get to you first!
Or possibly he is over excited with your return, my dog does other odd behaviors when I come home. maybe separate the dog and horses, am sure you have tried this already-good luck!
