Well, if you like science fiction type books, you might enjoy the Uglies trilogy, by Scott Westerfeld. Set in a possible future, everyone is ugly until they turn 16, when they are changed, through an operation, into a Pretty. Imagine - you're only responsibility is to have fun! But that's what's on the surface, and these books follow the path of a young woman that learns what's really going on.

Have you read any Gary Paulsen? He wrote Hatchet, about the boy that gets stranded in the wilderness when the pilot in his small plane has a heart attack. He has written other novels, too, including Brian's Winter, a follow up to Hatchet - what if Brian isn't rescued?

Walter Dean Myers is another author you might check out. He wrote a book called Monster, written in script form from the point of view of a young man that got caught - I think he was the lookout.

Sharon Draper has a couple that are supposed to be good as well, especially Tears of a Tiger. A high school basketball player makes some decisions that affect the rest of his life. I skimmed it, but sell it every time I get a copy pretty quickly.

Paul Zindel might be another good one. I have one of his to read now. And Louis Sachar. He wrote Holes as well as many others to choose from.

that depends on what you're interested in. I myself am interested in French literature. I like Notre-Dame De Paris(The Hunchback of Notre-Dame), Les Miserables, Les Liasons Dangereues...(all English translations of course.) I also suggest anything by Charles Dickens, or William Shakespeare. The classics usually have it all...action, good story, good plots, humor, irony, historical signifigance. Plus it helps to read them, because if you take literature courses in high school or college a lot of them require you to read a lot, and reading the classics can help you prepare for that. Also if you're more into American classica...Stienbeck is a good author. On The Road is a REALLY good book. Those are more modern classics. Try your local bookstore, like Borders or barnes&Noble and tell a sales associate your interests and they might be able to help you find some books based on your interests.

One of the best I've ever read is "The Phantom Tollbooth" by Norton Juster. It's a hard book to classify--part fantasy, part fable, part humor--but it's great fun...and the more you read it, the more you will get out of it!
P.S. I'm a grownup now, but I pull out "Tollbooth" every now and then and -still- enjoy it!

This depends entirely on his interests. If he likes fantasy, then he'll have different recommendations than if he likes sport stories or teen soap or adventure. Amazon has a rate-this area, so if you (or he) locate books he already enjoys, then the site will automatically recommend others that readers of that style usually like.
