Dribbling

# The basics of dribbling:

* Dribble for a reason. Never dribble without a purpose. Don’t start or stop unless you know what you’re going to do.
* A dribble is a valuable tool. Use it to get closer to the basket or start a play.
* Passing moves the ball faster and easier than dribbling. Think of passing first.
* Learn to control the ball without looking at it. Keep your eyes up at all times.

# There are 5 basic reasons for dribbling:

* to advance the ball (when you can’t pass)
* to drive to score
* to get out of trouble
* to set up the offense
* to control the tempo of the game

# A great dribbler is one who recognizes when it is necessary to dribble and uses his skill, but more importantly knows when NOT to dribble.
# Your feet should be comfortably apart, knees and waist should be bent, spread your fingers and use your fingertips. Control the ball with your fingers and wrists. Keep the ball low to the floor for better control.
# Keep yourself between the ball and the player guarding you.
# Handle the ball with your fingertips (you have more sensitivity in your fingertips). Keep your fingers spread and relaxed but firm.
# Keep away from sidelines and corners.
# A good dribbler must be a head-up, alert passer, or he becomes just a “bouncer of the ball” and destroys teamwork.
# When you receive the ball, don’t put the ball immediately on the floor. Look first to pass or shoot and then finally dribble.

There's no name for it. It's not really a part of the game, they just do it so they can dribble the ball without picking it up.
