Gas has butane added so that it has a detectable smell, kind of a sweet smell which gives a little cloying sensation at the back of the throat. If you're not sure you could always do it the old fashioned way and buy a canary, this is what the old miners did, canaries are intolerant to natural gas and keel over from it!

Natural gas has no smell at all. But mercaptan is added to give it that characteristic "gassy" smell. If you've ever smelled it you will remember it.
Don't panic. If the smell is really strong, get outside without flipping any switches and call your gas supplier. If you have a large wrench and understand the valves at your gas meter you can shut it off yourself to stop the leak until a professional can locate and repair it.

Do you mean a gas leak in your home or in your car? If you suspect a gas leak in your home for goodness sakes, call your local gas company... that's very dangerous....and there is usually no smell at all....... in your car.... well, first of all it smells like the gas you put into your tank...obviously... secondly, look beneath your car where you always park... you should see some signs of a leak on the ground.
