Was and is a success. First it achieved its goal to reduce travel time between the two oceans and this worked beautifully not only in peace times but also in the times of the war without which the US would have had a hard time moving ships from one ocean to the other.
It has also been an economical success. It brought prosperity to the country even though there have been negative points as well.
Nowadays it is in 100% panamanian hands and in any single year the Panama Canal brings the country much more money that it ever received in *all* the years it was "leased" to the US.
Where all that money goes is another thing... surely there is much more prosperity now but the same way I strongly believe a lot of that money the ACP gives the government (they don't give it all for obvious reasons) seeps away into the pockets of corrupt politicians at all levels.

Yes, the panama canal was a success because it allowed most ships and boats to travel straight from the atlantic to the pacific and vice versa without having to sail right around the tip of south America, many people died making it cause of the explosions required to blow out the tons of rock every day but also cause of malaria and yellow fever due to the horrible conditions that they lived in. The canal was started to be built in 1880 under french leadership and opened in 1914 but not after roughly 27,500 people from the U.S and South America gave their lives to make it happen. It is now a key conduit in international shipping and roughly 14,000 ships travel through it every year apart from aircraft carriers which are to large and have to sail around the tip of South America. That should answer your question, for any more details go on wikipedia and search for panama canal, Thank you, goodnight.

Yes now you dont have to sail all the way around South America to get from the Pacific to the Atlantic. Much, much shorter this way.
