Besides fighting a war of conquest during ww2 vs ww1. The US became actively engaged in the world stage in implementing the "peace" as opposed to ww1 when america took their bat and ball and went home and wanted nothing to do with the rest of the world.
Of course the fact that after ww2 there was a formidble superpower vieing for control of the conquered territories did play a role in that decision.
The US became an extremely militarized country following ww2, which had not happened before in it's history. That military industrial complex remains a troublesome legacy today.

At the end of the first world war Wilson pushed for the league of nations to resolve differences between nations but the US pulled out because we were involved in various interventions in Latin America and other reasons that we could not reconcile with our interests. At the end of the second world war we worked harder to support the new UN and as a buffer to Soviet advancement we pushed the Marshall plan, And American interests were served but more subtly. Only the last few years have we used a very aggressive policy for pursuit of our interests, angering the world. Super powers must walk softly, nobody likes the big guy who is pushing people around.
