Hemingway's short stories. His characters have lived enough to know how painful life and love can be, but they don't give up. Every American man should know something of the adventurer Hemingway was. There's a certain vitality in his writings as well as his life. Take it from a 40 year old man.

I am in your age range, albeit a female.
My favorite book of 2006 was by Amy Tan, titled
"Saving Fish From Drowning". It is an adventure story, with elements of foreign travel,kidnapping, intrigue, culture clashes,spiritual nether worlds and relationships of all sorts.
It was such a treat to read that I rushed home from work to take up where I'd left off the night before.

Are you buying a gift for a 45 year old? If you don't know the person well enough to know what their interests are, then perhaps you should get to know them better before buying them gifts.

Something he might like is "Little Big Man" by Thomas Berger. It is even better than the movie.
