Frankenstein is the story of Victor Frankenstein's hubris - his desire to play God and create life. It is also about nurturing and taking responsibility for our creations. Victor did not do that. After he gave life to The Creature, he abandoned him unprepared to deal with the world. Those were Victor's two transgressions that he eventually paid a dear price for. The Creature was anything BUT a "monster" which is why Mary
Shelley refers to him as "The Creature". He was a victim of Victor's transgressions. C.

Victor leaves his family and his fiance to go to university. He becomes obsessed with finding a way to stop death, due to his terrible grief over his mother's passing. He animates his "creature," only to be distraught and overcome by the "monstrosity" of his creation.

He abandons the creature, who attempts to fend for himself. Eventually, the creature locates his creator and blackmails him into creating a "bride," a companion that will be his counterpart. In the mean time, Victor has lost more family members, including his fiance (whom he kept putting off, anyway)--to the creature. The two are locked in a continuous struggle, with Victor finally backing out of creating the feminine creature.
