Bondage and SM are both sexual behaviours.
Bondage involves the restraining of one person by the other to heighten the sexual feeling. SM goes a step further in that there is often pain inflicted. This might go from mild spanking to plain chains and whips.

S & M is more about pain, the sadist liking to inflict it and the masochist wanting to receive it. It can something simple like a slap or a pinch, a spanking... or involve something more serious such as whipping, burning, caning.
Bondage is a loss of freedom, someone that likes to be tied up (or tied down, depending on how you look at it) while their partner likes to do the tying. People are more likely to do role reversal in bondage (e.g. "you tie me up tonight and I'll tie you up tomorrow") while true sadists and masochists do NOT want to change places with their partner.
There's also dominance and submission (D/s) where someone likes to control the other. Punishment and/or reward may be used.
Some people are into a combination of these lifestyles.

Light bondage is when Mr Joe Everybody goes into a sex shop and buys some fluffy handcuffs to "surprise" his wife. After one session the cuffs end up in the back of a closet. Regular bondage is when he goes to home depot, buys 200 feet of rope, cuts it in pieces of 12 - 20 feet, puts tape on the ends and uses them at least once a week to tie up or be tied up. Furthermore he visits bondage workshops with his wife, goes to munches and does extensive research on the web. Lastly he knows what Safe, Sain and Consensual means.

Looks like Sue knows her stuff. To me, light bondage is tying my wife up to the bed (or using nice leather cuffs), blindfolding her, and giving her a wonderful orgasm. I like to use a gag on occasion, though she isn't fond of them. To me, heavy bondage would be tying her up in odd positions on the floor or against the wall, whipping / spanking, and just doing a lot of stuff that doesn't seem to bring her closer to climax. Bondage is about trust, anticipation, and sensual experience. Some people get a bit carried away with it as though they were practicing art on the canvas of their spouse. If that's fun for both of them, have fun. p.s. although handcuffs are iconic of bondage, we never use them. They are uncomfortable. Buy some fabric or leather cuffs from an adult store and you will thank me.

The sadist likes to inflict the pain while the masochist enjoys having the pain inflicted while being "tied up". The true sadist will not allow their selves to be in bondage.

S&M? Well let me put it this way. It's like my mother used to say. "You won't be happy until someone gets hurt!"
