I have found that a magazine called Computeractive is an excellent aid when you are just starting out. It's only £1.45 a fortnight and has various projects using well known software each issue. They are done step by step and use plain English. Where they use abbreviations they explain them in a side column, I used to get it some years ago and it helped me immensely. They also have an excellent website at http://www.computeractive.co.uk You can register for free and then ask for help on the forums. They have some very good tech guys there, and they also have links to download software such as Anti Virus Firewalls etc. Hope this helps and welcome to a fascinating hobby.

You'll never get a really good working relationship with your computer without learning at least a little about how it works.
Don't worry though, just use your head and you'll learn as you go.
