Unbelievable as it may sound, yes it is a crime. It is murder, no matter if you are killing yourself or someone else!
In most states if you attempt suicide & don't suceed, you will be put into a mental institution, evaluated, & for the most part will need someone to vouch for your safety before they will release you or until they decide you will not try it again!

As with most legal issues, the answer varies by state.
Suicide is not illegal in California, nor (according to the state supreme courts) in Ohio and Nebraska. It does seem to be illegal (according to the appropriate state courts) in at least South Carolina, Rhode Island, Florida and Indiana.
Amusingly, the justification given by the Indiana court is that "self-destruction is against the law of God" [Wallace v. State, 116 N.E.2d 100 (1953)], and thus grounds for it to be punished by the state. But that justification is 50 years old.
You'd need to check the laws of the appropriate state for a local answer. For those who say that it's illegal in their state, it would be nice if they included an actual reference to the appropriate state law.
As a side note, assisting or causing someone to commit suicide is a crime in almost every state, and attempted suicide is illegal in a few states.

well where i live anyway yes, I think that this is a stupid law because if someone hates their life that bad that they want to kill themselves. They should beable to. It's there life and they have the right to end it if they want to. Just make sure that if you kill yourself (which I am in no way suggesting) that you suceed so you don't get put in a mental home or worse.

yes, it might sound weird..but if you try to kill yourself and fail, you will be charged with attempted murder...of course you'll never see the inside of a prison, just a room with padded walls..
obviously if you succeed then you can't be charged with anything...because you're dead.
