I am just over 40 weeks pregnant, and 3 cm dilated 50% effaced. I am going in tomorrow to be induced. They said they are going to break my water to try and start labour, and if that doesnt work, try oxitocin. Does anyone know how well breaking the waters works, (and if its painful), because I really dont want oxitocin if I dont need too? Also, does oxitocin hurt really bad?

water break does not hurt...usually when they break it you start getting pretty slammed w/ contractions...the pitocin will help amp up the contractions.....you can only go so long w/ broken water before you MUST deliver, so they will prob. give pitocin....take the epidural........it really makes labor more bearable and helps you be able to pay attention and see your baby being born.

I was induced will all 3 of mine. My cervix was not ready for the first 2, so I still had to have the oxitocin after my water was broken. With the last, I was 3 cm dilated, and after my water was broken the contractions got into full swing, and only had the oxitocin for half an hour. I would imagine that with your cervix being so ready you will not need anything more, after your water is broken you should go into full swing labour. it is not the oxitocin that is painful, but if you do have it, your contractions will be very painful because the medicine is causing you to go into heavy labour, but that is the same as going into heavy labour on your own. But take solace in the fact it will be over soon, and as soon as you hold your little one it will be over. Good luck and Congratulations.

Well, I had my water broken a couple hours after they had given me the pitocin (oxitocin). And I had an epidural, so I could feel nothing when the doctor broke my water. They break it by carefully and quickly inserting a hook that looks similar to a knitting needle. I've heard women who have not had an epidural say that they can feel it, but it's not really very painful. Also, the oxitocin does not hurt you, it just makes your contractions quicker and stronger, which will definitely get painful if you don't have an epidural. But of course, it would hurt normally even w/out oxitocin. I think you'll be just fine, since you are so far along and already dilated/thinned. Good luck, hope the baby is perfect and healthy!

I was induced at 38 weeks because of high blood pressure. They started me on Pitocin and then a couple of hours later they broke my water. Breaking the water doesn't hurt. The doctor will use a stick that has a hook on it(sounds scary but its not) he will insert and break the water. You will feel a gosh of warm water and then that's it. I started to feel the contraction come on fast and stronger right afterwards. The oxitocin is given through your IV, they will start it out slow and see if any contractions come on, and if they are really that strong they will then give you more of it. Honestly I liked being induced. It all was scheduled and not crazy and it made me more relaxed. Good luck!!

When they induced me and than broke my water it kind of hurt although the last time I had so much pain medication I couldn't move my legs kind of felt nice that I didnt' really feel the labor pains. When they broke my water with my other two it hurt like hell for a second (I mean cramping) and the labor went fast. If you get an ephidurel (Spelling) you'll love it. Good Luck!
Oh and oxitocin does hurt after your body absorbs it and starts the labor process. I have never felt what it is like to be in labor without it so I couldn't tell you the difference.

I think that it depends on the woman about breaking the waters, but when they did it to me, it hurt like hell. That was me, though.

I know that the pitocin brings on stronger contractions, and that they DO usually hurt worse than natural labor. My first was induced, and it was no picnic. I hope that this one comes naturally.

The good news is that once they break your water, it only hurts for a minute. If you're going to get an epidural, that will probably be the worst of your pain.

You should be okay. I wish you the best.

The doctor broke my water after I was induced.

2 hours after being induced I started to get really bad contractions. Once I was fully dilated the doc broke my water. The breakage of my water did not hurt at all. It felt a little funny when it was pouring out of me.

Relax, good luck and Congratulations.

i was induced with my baby three months ago. it doesn't hurt when you get your water broken and the oxitocin doesn't hurt either it just helps make the contractions come one stringer at a steady pace. its just an unconftorable feeling. i was also in labor for 36 hours and i had to have a c-section. my baby was just to big. but my sister-in-law had hers in like three hours when she was inducd.so don't worry the doc's know what their doing. plus they give you some really good stuff to ease the pain. and ask for the epadoral as soon as the pain starts hurting a little because by the time they order it and give it to you the contractions will be coming on really strong. so good luck

Braking your water is not painful and either is the drug they use to induce you b/c it is administered through an IV. At the last moment I begged for an epidural which to me was so painful when the doc inserted it and felt very akward like my back was being arched very high. But finally I relaxed and the epidural began to numb me from the waist down. Go for some pain relief b/c not only are the contractions painfully but they tire you out so quickly Good Luck and congrats!! Remember to breathe!!!

The breaking of the water isn't particularily painful. Oxitocin can make the labor come fast and somewhat painful - but hey it's labor. At least with oxitocin, it should get over quicker than it would otherwise.

Try to relax and get foot massages (get an epidural if you can - you won't regret it, and neither will your family around you)
