I have a genealogy hobby and constantly read US censuses. It's plain to me that family size had greatly reduced by the years you gave. It seems to me this had occurred by about 1900. I seldom see more than 5 or 6, often as few as 1. What I don't know is what birth control methods they were using and I'm curious.

It really depended on which Country you are talking about. IF you are talking about the U.S. that also depends on if you are asking about the City people or the Country people. Country people almost always had lots of children to help around on the farm. They had a lot of children because they could not afford to hire farm hands and making the kids work always helped build the family equity.Any where from 8-20 children for the country folk. City people did not have that many children because they did not usually have jobs that could support large families.

4, 6, and more.

However in the 1919 and 1920 timeframe many lost children due to the flu.

My grandmother lost 5 of her 6 boys - and she had 12 children in their nice Italian family.

My mom had 2 girls, and 1 have 1 girl.

GOD bless us always.
