Couple of different ways - one is pin the fabric together, another is tape. Now i am assuming you are refering to two pieces of fabric? Sewing 2 pieces of clothing together is a bit different.

Pin them together first and remember to leave a way to get them on and off (for example, don't sew a vest over a dress so that the zipper won't open).

Put the right sides together because when you are done sewing, you'll want to turn it right side out so that the seams won't show.
