Im a high school student and i just started working at the local drug store last month. I have this co-worker that is hard to work with. She is asked to do something by the managment but she never gets it done, or takes alot of breaks in between tasks. I cant complain to managment, because most of the time she back their talking to them instead of working. Im getting tired of having to pick up her slack. Whenever im working with her i have to prepare myself to do double the work while collecting minimum wage, and at the same time listen to her ramble on about her love life.... its reall irratating. I dont know what to do because my manager is her friend and i dont want to sound like a jerk by complaining. Not to mention this girl is a promotion to manager, so i'll have to deal with her more soon.

Only do your job. That is what you are assigned to do. If the other stuff gets left undone ask quizically, " I thought lazy bones was assigned to that?"

I *totally* know how you feel! Unfortunately, those kinds of people are everywhere. And no, lowering your work standard is not going to win you any points. Just keep working hard. Do extra tasks without being asked. Believe me, that stuff gets noticed (especially if you casually mention it LOL).
You bosses will soon realize that they have made a mistake hiring a person that is all talk, no work. And if they don't...lets face it, this is a minimum wage high school job. You won't be there forever.

She is in a promotion to manager position, so she is being groomed to do as little as possible so that the new people can pick up the slack, so really.... its none of your business as this was all a part of her roll before you were hired.

If you don't like it, build your own ladder.

This situation happens in all jobs, careers, businesses, and it's maddening. That is one of the hardest things about working, you must train yourself to "tune out" the "feeb" workers and cover your job correctly.
Many people at all levels spend most of their work-time chatting, just so they don't actually have to work. Don't be like them---detach mentally and try to be positive.

Find a new job. If she's friends with the management, things will never change.

thats a slacker, not a deadbeat... a deadbeat is someone who runs from paying child support/doesnt pay for their children.

slackers pizz me off too, then they go around saying how hard they work. i'm not saying they have to run around like crazy, but they DO have to pull their weight like the rest of us out here.

buy her a bunch of flowers; on the card, write; "#1 slacker award". then again, if she is promoted, you may wish to make it a gift with her name, but NOT yours on it.

:)
