Characterization helps to tell parts of the story without the author having to spell it out for the reader.

Because it makes the people we write about full and well rounded. I find that intermingling little every day things into my books helps to tell more about the person's character. Say for instance, a PI is waiting on line at the grocery store when his phone rings to tell him that a body has been discovered yadda yadda. Adding little details like how annoyed he is that he has to wait while the lady in front of him has 14 items in the ten item or less line helps me to give him a personality. As Mies van der Rowe said - God is in the details. That's how I use characterization. Otherwise you are writing about flat cardboard cutout characters. C.

what's characterization? the way the author famous the character's character by words, action, and ideas. the authors shows characterization via describing, making use of words to locate a character, or tell wha the character is doing. Brian

Let me put it this way. Being a writer (sadly still unpublished) myself, I know that there are many answers to this question. Why I personally use characters and personalities is that I mold them how I want to be. I model them after old friends, what I would like to be in life, and maybe someone new all together. It makes you think, what would happen if this person acted like this in this situation. It allows me to take my mind off of the sadness and pain that can be thrown at you in life. It lets me focus on happy things, fictional or real, about people (and in one case Dogs...). I hope this helped a bit!

It makes the book/story/poem more interesting. If characters just appeared in the story and authors didn't give the characters any features or personalities, then how would you know they look like or what kind of person they are.

Stories that have characters that sound like real flesh and blood people are more interesting than cardboard type people.
