Here are the official websites, they aren't nearly as clearly written as some other countries immigration information, so be prepared to print it out or read through real carefully.

Immigration Home Page

http://usimmigrationlaws.net/

In short, it helps if you have family in the U.S. or an employer ready to hire and help sponsor you, but there are a number of classes of immigration. Best thing is to read through the information, then ask more questions as they occurr to you or on things that aren't clear.

apply for a visa and apply for a social security card. good luck on immigrating as they are very strict now but may let you in if you are a good law abiding British citizen. There are many illegal British here, I am told, but I wouldn't go that route as many have been deported after years of living here.
It takes several years to become a citizen if at all.
go to the immigration home page and also check with the British passport services for more information. You can have dual citizenship if you are a British national. Good Luck.
