I am about to travel to Vietnam and Thailand to help a friend buy goods for his shop here in NZ. He wants to stock goods similar to the kind of things available at 'Pier One Imports' in the US. Funky stuff, traditional arts etc. As we have limited time in HCMC we need some advise as to the best places to go....and maybe make contacts for long term purchasing possibilities. Thanks for your help!

You would do better to contact the Vn consulate or embassy in NZ. Speak to the business office, they will help you find manufacturers as opposed to middle-men. While all the markets in Saigon (especially in District One) carry touristy things, the factories and artisans that produce them are located all over the country. The government will help you to find them.
One last thing, what's really convienent about Saigon is that there are different streets that sell different things. For instance, near my dentist's office is a street that has dozens of musical instrument shops. It makes it easy to compare prices.
You may want to hire a car for the day and explain to the driver what you are looking for.
Also, check out Vietnam Economic News on the web. I have read several stories of companies involved in the business that you have described.

In Hochiminh city, Ben Thanh Market and Tan Dinh Market are the good places for you to buy thousands goods you need.

yes, if you have limited time the large markets [ benh thanh, cho lon] are the easist places to shop [ though more expensive ] but this is important: DONT BUY WOOD PRODUCTS.. even expensive ones will crack this goes for most laquer wear also.. i know they are real nice but everything i've ever bought there [ lots of stuff] has broken....also if you buy stone or ceramic stuff "over pack "it. they are VERY fragile.
