When a person takes a polygraph test, four to six sensors are attached to him. A polygraph is a machine in which the multiple ("poly") signals from the sensors are recorded on a single strip of moving paper ("graph"). The sensors usually record:

The person's breathing rate
The person's pulse
The person's blood pressure
The person's perspiration

Sometimes a polygraph will also record things like arm and leg movement.
When the polygraph test starts, the questioner asks three or four simple questions to establish the norms for the person's signals. Then the real questions being tested by the polygraph are asked. Throughout questioning, all of the person's signals are recorded on the moving paper.

Both during and after the test, a polygraph examiner can look at the graphs and can see whether the vital signs changed significantly on any of the questions. In general, a significant change (such as a faster heart rate, higher blood pressure, increased perspiration) indicates that the person is lying.

When a well-trained examiner uses a polygraph, he or she can detect lying with high accuracy. However, because the examiner's interpretation is subjective and because different people react differently to lying, a polygraph test is not perfect and can be fooled.

A recent "article" states that scientists in a norther Italian city have developed a lie detector that is 90-93% accurate, which is a huge improvement on the accuracy rates of conventional polygraphs that have around 80% accuracy.

Personally I don't know if they really work but I believe that those who want to beat the lie detector and know how it works can certainly make it ineffective.

Over time they become better liars with more practice.

Please see website for the article on an improved lie detector.

They work, but there are three types of people who can "beat" the test. The first type is those without a conscience. The second type is those who practice and have been trained to control their physical and mental responses so that they can "fool" the test. And the third is those who suffer from certain mental illnesses. But at any rate, don't go on some show and make a fool of yourself. It's not worth the 5 minutes of fame.

What makes a dude a pervert if all he's doing is finding out some chick's? possibly he did it possibly he did no longer. Makes you ask your self why this all got here out basically after Herman Cain became a genuine probability as a candidate. He did no longer injury all of us, no longer something approximately being pushed right into a gloomy corner. extremely a guy can ask a girl to dinner and if she so chooses could make the case for some form of harassment. it is not perverted to ask somebody for somewhat action, if she says no and that's the tip of it whats the massive deal? it is unlike those chicks have the holiest of ho-lies think of how undesirable the poon is that in the event that they get all freaked out via only speaking approximately it.

The only way to know is to see how well the test has performed over the years, and it seems that usually its a good way of detecting lies.

I'm not sure if there is anyone out there who is physiologically normal and can control ones own physiological parameters that are recorded here, in order to con the test.

They work most of time, I think about 67% of the time. They don't work if:
a) the person truly believes what they are saying is true (either actually or through intense self-delusion)
b) They are a sociopath, who simply do not register emotion the same way normal people, and often have a complete absence of remorse.

overall they are a good indicator of whether or not someone is telling the truth. It measures your hear rate and in most people heart rate increases when lying. It is an overall good indicator, but some people can control their heart rate through various means and can pass a lie detecting test even if they are lying, but most times it is a good indicator.

Everything I've ever read on the subject says basically the same thing....the results of a polygraph are pretty much determined by WHO is giving the test.

No, because all they test is your blood pressue and stuuf. The things they test could be abnormal simply because you're nervous. Most people would be nervous even if they weren't lying
