because of it's gravity. it holds everything on it by it's huge mass.

or it can be something dealing witht he plate techtonics. i dunno what you're going for. what grade is this for?

aaahhh! here it is:
The conditions in the interior of the Earth actually create a magnetic field. So, it's like the Earth has a bar magnet inside of it, creating a magnetic field. The magnetic field of the Earth is surrounded by the magnetosphere.
