A buddy gave me a 4 slot usb reader. as soon as I plugged it into my usb port, my computer shut down. I removed the usb and it powered back on but it would not respond or show anything on the monitor. I unplugged it for a few minutes hoping it would reset but it did not. The fans run and it powers on, but it will not boot up. Upon further reveiw I realized the usb reader calls for a 5v- 2.5 a power cord. I used a 12v 1000ma power cord. I am sure this is the cause of the problem. I opened the CPU to see if I could find a blown fuse or evidence of something burnt up but I see no fuses, nor do I smell or see anything burnt. Any help as to what my next step should be would be greatly appreciated! I really don't want to take it to the shop. Any other recommendations? Thanks!

1) is anything comming to the screen.. soon you power on the computer ?
If its not, then probably the high voltage from the USB reader may harm the internal circuits. obviously you wont feel any burned smell because all internal circuits operate with 2.8 V to 3.8 V, Motors - 5 V.
As you can see, you gave relatively a high voltage. (5 V vs 12 V) Even 6V for a enough period of time could burn internal circuits.

2) There wont be any fuse for a usb port.

3) Remember, when technicians do internal repairs, it is recomended to be connected to a grounded wire to eliminate statics, even a small static electricity could damage a silicon circuit.

4) if the computer show a POST screen, then it can be something different.

if its nothing at all, sorry to say, you probably have to buy a new motherboard.

Try this, There is a battery inside your computer, remove it for few minutes (say 10 minutes) and put it back and try to restart. it will reset your computer's CMOS setup.

I had same problem like that before. Scree was black fans working hard drive not working and same with cdrom drive.

It was the powersupply. I have a power supply tester so i hooked it up no light. no light bad power supply. I am pretty sure thats what the problem is.
