Between the time of transport your flowers from store to your home, the end of the stem become dry. The flower would not absorb the water in your vase. Therefore, to cut some inches off is just to cut off the dry and death stem. Also, add some sugar or 7up in your vase would help the flower last longer.

Hi there. The ends of the stems are injured in their containers through deterioration caused by bacteria in the water of the vase or container. By cutting them the capillary action is more easily accomplished by the flower to bring water to the flower. They may stay fresher longer. Pooh is right about the 7-up or sugar addition. Aspirin doesn't help the flowers last longer. It is an old wive's tail .Have a nice day.

People who get the flowers together use sap to seal the flower stem, so you have to cut an inch or two to let water get to them when you water it or it will die.

I think it's so it can soak up the water easier, because after cutting the ends, it kind of "refreshes" the stem so the water can come in easier.
