Many reasons

Personally it depends on the following major factors:

The age of the game
Which operating system you are using
Your systems minimum gaming requirements
Hardware requirements
Ram - memory
Compatibility

Some games are so old you need to ensure your pc can change the format of the game.
This can be done by installing the game, right hand clicking the game icon on the desktop, selecting properties and compatibility and changing the games operating system run mode.

Other games may be too modern for your system, again without knowing what system you have this can be hard to say. Many recent and graphical high dependency games are in the format PC DVD disks. In order to play the games you need a DVD drive on your pc and a working DVD decoder.

Many games will not run without the required standards.

Any number of reasons, but these two are the most typical: Not enough RAM, and not a good enough video card. If you don't feel comfortable doing upgrades, have a professional do them for you.

you could have lots of reason for that, maybe your system does not meet the system requirement for it, maybe it was installed improperly. try posting the game and your system requirement next time.. hope this helps.
